Denver
– Two Colorado nonprofit organizations are richer following the 2007 CHFA/J. David Barba Golf Tournament held July 31 in Westminster.
Urban Peak, which is dedicated to assisting teenagers and young adults facing homelessness and other challenges, and Energy Outreach Colorado, which helps low income Colorado families with their energy needs, each received $56,500 following the tournament.
It was the 16th year of the golf tournament sponsored by the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority (CHFA), and the fourth year that it was a fundraising event. Each year, the amount raised has increased, and the $113,000 raised this year was the highest yet for the charity event.
It is not the first time Energy Outreach Colorado and Urban Peak have had a connection. Urban Peak recently received an energy efficiency upgrade through the Nonprofit Energy Efficiency Project, a project managed by Energy Outreach Colorado through a partnership with the Denver Foundation, Xcel Energy Foundation, Daniels Fund, Mile High United Way, and the Governor’s Office of Energy Management and Conservation. The project provides energy upgrades to nonprofit organizations, resulting in lower energy costs and more capital to use to meet their mission.
CHFA has been sponsoring the golf tournament for 16 years, but it only became a fundraiser four years ago. The tournament is named for former state auditor and CHFA Board member J. David Barba, who passed away in 2001. His wife Cheryl and their daughters Sara and Anna continue to be involved in the tournament, held this year at The Ranch in Westminster.
“It’s remarkable that the golf tournament has been so successful since it became a fundraiser,” said CHFA Executive Director Milroy A. Alexander. “We think it is a fitting tribute to a man who devoted his life to Colorado and to his family. The fact that it benefits worthwhile nonprofits from around the state is the appropriate way to honor Dave Barba.”
