CHFA-sponsored homebuyer education classes will help you learn the ins-and-outs of buying a home.

Colorado is returning to pre-pandemic activities. To this end, CHFA is also transitioning back to our pre-pandemic homebuyer education model.

So, what’s changing?

  • Borrowers choosing to take a CHFA- approved online class will have until October 31, 2022, to utilize the coupon code allowing the course to be taken at no charge. A class must only be started, not completed, by this date.
  • All borrowers beginning a CHFA-approved online class on or after November 1, 2022, will be required to pay a $75 fee.
  • In-person and live webinars will continue to be free.

What to Expect from the Class

The best time to take a homebuyer education class is when you are considering buying a home.

You will become an informed homebuyer and successful homeowner by learning:
  • How to create a budget as a homeowner
  • How credit impacts homebuying options and how to improve your credit
  • How to find a real estate agent and a lender
  • The costs of homebuying and the approval process
  • What to expect as a homeowner

Steps to Finding, Registering, and Completing a Class

Important: Upon completing a class, the housing counseling agency will issue a certificate. Certificates are valid for 12 months; a borrower must be under contract to purchase a home before expiration of the certificate.

Online Option: Self-paced, averaging six hours

  1. CHFA offers online homebuyer education through a network of housing counseling agencies. Each borrower must individually and independently register and complete a class.
  2. When registering, pick a listed housing counseling agency and take note of your choice for your records and future correspondence.
  3. Upon completion of the online course, all borrowers must participate in a follow-up call with a housing counselor to receive a certificate; the counseling agency will email or call you with instructions to set-up the appointment. After the call, the counseling agency (not CHFA) will send you the certificate. Please note, borrowers in the same household should register with the same agency, complete the course independently, and can attend the follow-up call together.
  4. Provide the certificate to your lender.
  5. The lender will submit the certificate to CHFA.
  6. Register for the online course here.
