In this practical, housing-focused training, service coordinators and human services staff working in and with affordable communities will gain a solid foundation in Fair Housing laws and how to apply them in real-world settings. The session is designed to help staff confidently support residents while reducing legal and operational risk for housing providers.
Participants will learn to:
- identify and understand the seven federally protected classes, and additional protections under state or local law;
- recognize discriminatory practices, including different treatment and disparate impact;
- navigate reasonable accommodation and modification requests with clarity and confidence; and
- understand Section 504 and its relevance to federally assisted properties.
Using realistic, service-oriented scenarios, we’ll explore common challenges such as:
- assistance animal verification and boundaries;
- hoarding behaviors and balancing resident support with property standards; and
- effective documentation of accommodation requests.
Participants will be provided with a Fair Housing checklist for service interactions, and practical Q and A time to troubleshoot current cases or concerns.
Support your team in providing equitable, person-centered service while staying compliant with Fair Housing law. This class is a must for professionals who work at the intersection of housing, health, and resident support.
This class is offered at no charge to participants.
