The value of companion animals in our lives is well understood and backed by decades of research. Although owners and operators of affordable housing often anecdotally understand the importance of the human-animal bond, knowing what steps to take to implement a pet-inclusive housing policy can be elusive.

This workshop creates space for a limited number of participants to put pen to paper and develop the first draft of their pet policy prototype. Facilitators will guide participants through exercises to help craft the headings and bullets for a pet policy informed by local laws and resources.

By the end of this workshop, participants will have:

1. A first draft of their housing pet policy for discussion with their leadership team;

2. Bookmarked relevant local and state veterinary public health laws that will impact their pet policy;

3. Bookmarked relevant local animal welfare agencies and departments that may be resources for further policy and resource development; and

4. Outlined first thoughts on pet registration, pet density, pet care standards, and potential financial obligations of tenants with pets.

Note: This workshop is the second of a two-part series on pet policies in rental housing. Part One, “Models in Affordable Housing,” held September 23, 2025, serves as a broad overview of the research, practices, and examples of pets in housing.

Part Two, “Developing Your Pet-policy Prototype,” is an in-depth workshop allowing participants to work directly on creating a pet-friendly housing policy.

This workshop will not be recorded.
